As the new ruler, the Empress Dowager Zhao was confronted with the invasion of the Qin state. Seeking aid from the Qi state, they were told, "We can only provide assistance if you offer Chang'an Prince as collateral." The Empress Dowager replied resolutely, "I deeply cherish Chang'an Prince, and this cannot be done." Left Minister Chu Long asked for an audience, and the Empress Dowager awaited him with anger. Upon entering, Chu Long walked slowly, arriving before the Empress Dowager and offering an apology, "The old minister has a foot ailment, making it difficult to walk quickly. I have not been able to see you for a long time, and I forgive myself, but I fear your health may also be affected, so I wish to see you." The Empress Dowager replied, "I rely on the sharpness of my ears and eyes, and a little rest will suffice." Chu Long continued, "I have heard that in the states of Yan, Zhao, Han, and Wei, it is said, 'When one grows old and does not study, it is called senile foolishness.' This is not only true for the old people of the state of Zhao, but also for me." The Empress Dowager asked, "Then, why don't your brothers study to improve their virtue?" Chu Long replied, "My brothers are all unworthy, and not fit for study." The Empress Dowager continued, "I have three sons; why don't your brothers study to improve their virtue?" Chu Long repeated his answer, "The old minister's brothers are all unworthy, and not fit for study." And so, the two engaged in a profound discussion on the issue of studying to improve virtue.
